"You've
changed my life"
"My worries have flown away"
"You've helped me to feel good about myself so I can sort out my
problems"
Emotive phrases,
indeed; spoken by a five year old boy who had constantly been in trouble
for hurting other children and was 'out of control', a seven year old
whose mum had suddenly disappeared and a fourteen year old girl who had
such low self esteem she felt like taking her own life. As the three support
workers in the Time For You 5-13 team, we hear this sort of response regularly
after working with our clients for a while. We have cared for over three
hundred young people from the ages of five to fifteen within schools and
in homes throughout the Cromer and North Walsham school clusters this
last three years.

"What
is the point in your job? Children don't have problems do they?"
- A typical response from an adult who thought childhood to be idyllic
and carefree. The reality is a soup of complex and urgent worries,
and pressures placed upon children from a very young age in these
materialistic and high-pressured times.

"Mum told me Dad was evil but I still love him. I'm very
confused. They don't care what happens to me."
"I've
got all the new Playstations but nobody cares what I do!"
.. we care!
